Travelling is something most people like because there is that kind of excitement and spirit you only get by stepping out of your home and exploring new places. However, there is also one hassle that make many travelers feel like staying at home; flying. Of course there are other ways you can travel such as taking train or driving your own car. However, a flight sometimes is unavoidable for particular destination. 

How to combat your fear of flying

There are many factors why travelers afraid of flying such as claustrophobia or fear of heights. They feel irrational fear and anxiety just to be inside of the cabin plane. Here are some tips you can consider to combat your fear of flying:

Learn the basic of how airplanes work so you know what to expect. It can help rationalize your fear. Also, avoid reading blogs or articles about crashing airplanes and accidents because it will only add your anxiety. If you don’t know what to look for, ask yourself a questions such as what makes you fear of flying, why you make a big deal out of it, etc. Then look for the answer from trusted and reliable resources. 

You can try familiarize yourself with the image of the plane. For example, put a picture of a plane’s cabin in your computer desk so you can always look at it. Hopefully your fear has reduced significantly by the time you have to take the flight. Familiarity can relieve anxiety in some ways. 

How to combat your fear of flying

If the reason of your fear of flying is your claustrophobia then book an aisle seat instead of the window ones. Aisle seat allows you to feel less crowded. You know you will be able to get up and move more freely by sitting in the aisle seat. It also applies for when your fear of flying is caused by fear of height. Choosing aisle seat means you won’t be able to see the sky-high view through the window. Hence, you can fly more comfortably. 

It is best to avoid rushing to the gate because it will worry yourself more. You will worry about missing the plane, and it will add to your anxiety. Get to the airport earlier, at least an hour before your departure so you have time to calm yourself and do everything more comfortable. 

Use anything to distract you from feeling anxious such as stocking up your phone with relaxing music, or preparing your book to read during the flight. Avoid watching any airplane disaster movies before and during the trip. Avoid news or coverage that talk about airplane crashes. It is best to read book about travel experience filled with positive energy. 

If you still feel anxious during the flight, try breathing exercise. Breathe slowly and deeply to calm yourself. Have a drink but avoid caffeinated beverages because it can drive your heartbeat faster causing more anxiety. You can also talk with your travel buddy or your seatmate to distract your fear.
