Basic Health Precautions for Travelers Going Anywhere

Getting sick in your destination is not fun. You’re in your destination to have a good time, not to lie in bed not not being able to do anything during your travel. What are the things you should heed?

The little things matter the most

Hygiene habits such as washing and scrubbing your hands thoroughly before any meal is one of the simplest things you can do to prevent yourself from getting sick. It may sound trivial, but records show that one of the most frequent causes for catching an illness is through the food and the water you consume.

Prevent insect bites

Insect-borne diseases range from a mild annoyance to deadly ones. The best way is to prevent the bite itself from happening. Insect repellent is something that you should always consider bringing or buying at your destination regardless whether your destination has an insect-borne disease reputation. A natural insect repellent that you can easily obtain in many tropical countries is cajuput oil. It has a distinct herbal scent to it, almost as light as water, and thanks to its natural sources, it’s safe to apply on your skin several times a day.

Always drink bottled water or water that has been boiled

Drinking from a tap water is a definite no. When you absolutely have to drink tap water, then make sure to boil it first. Whether you’re using stove or water heater, boiling the water is one of the safest ways to ensure that you’re not drinking contaminated water.

When in doubt, only eat fully cooked food

Some exotic food no doubt has its own way of processing. While some are perfectly okay to eat, some are rather questionable. If you have not done your own research regarding said food, then it’s best not to eat them. Uncooked food such as sushi and sashimi that you’re already familiar with at home are often already cooked in one way or another. Ones that are not cooked usually is turned into food the next instant those fishes are caught. This kind of instances are what you’d usually find in places such as Tsukiji Fish Market. When you absolutely want to taste food that you thought questionable, then make sure that you do your own research first. Chances are, there are travelers like you who have shared their experiences.

Check if you need to get vaccinated

Some areas or countries advises you to undergo some vaccinations before landing there. This is something that you’ll likely need to prepare in advance. Some vaccines should be taken no less than several months before you depart for your destination. Some vaccines cannot be taken when you have a certain condition, such as being pregnant or currently nursing. Research this well and ask for you health providers’ advices.

If you catch an illness when you’re at a certain destination, it won’t only bring disadvantages to you. Your loved ones and your community have risks of getting infected as well. This is why preventing catching an illness from happening is something that is something extremely important for your own well-being during your travel.

Avoiding Disease Outbreak and Other Health Issues in Your Travel Destination

Staying healthy during your trip is often not at the forefront of people’s mind. However, getting ill or catching certain diseases during your travel is hardly a way to spend it. What are some of the things you need to do in order to stay avoid an outbreak or other health issues during your travel?

Always check the travelers’ health notices before you plan your trip

Checking travelers health notices will not only give you the general information you’re looking for, but also give you the insights into the current happenings regarding the health issues all over the world that has affected travelers. Go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. It’s a good place for you to start. Go through the sections of topics that are relevant to you.

Research your destination’s health reports

Aside from the general report on travelers’ health, make sure to check your specific destinations as well. Certain destinations have different health measures compared to other places. Things such as vaccinations may be in order before you travel to certain areas or country.

Take note of any preventive measures you’ll need to do

You may need to undergo certain vaccinations before you depart to your destination. However, you may or may not go through the process depending on your present health conditions. Make sure to consult with your doctor about what you can and cannot go through to ensure your health during your travel.

Be informed about the basic health issues when traveling

Being aware of the most common issues would tremendously help in preventing you from getting ill during your travel. This can start simply by being aware that things like water and food, anywhere in the world, is not the same. People know that not all tap water anywhere can be drank, and yet some people still do it. Whether it’s blatant ignorance or the logic that the city or place they’re visiting is clean so far and that they’re staying at a 5 star accommodation.

When in doubt, research. Going to a destination without prior knowledge of basic things such as the safety food and water to consume there is never a wise one. Browse through forums for other travelers’ experiences. You’re likely to find one. Be informed as well as possible. It’s part of the journey to make the most out of your traveling. And you can’t do that if you get sick.

Consider cancelling your travel plans

Sure this is preferably the last measure you’ll have to take when the worse comes to worst. And while you’re hoping it won’t come to this, sometimes, avoiding the destination altogether is the best solution you can come up with. This would be the solution if, for instance, you have other people to take care of doing the whole trip. Bringing your kids or elderly family members to a destination less than ideal for their health would probably be more more trouble than it’s worth. Unless you have a very good reason for it. And if that reason is only a vacation on a tropical beach, then it’s probably best to reschedule your trip or changing the destination.

Travel Money Belts: Safely Keep Your Valuables During Your Journey

Money belts are an age-old trick to keep the pickpocketers away. Traveling exposes you to a number of things you may or may not encounter at home. And security is one of the topmost concerns of all time for any travelers, whether they’re traveling internationally or domestically.

Money belt is highly versatile

These babies can hold a number of different things and definitely not just money. You can carry a wide range of stuff. Get your passport inside your money belt for a safe keeping. A passport is something that contains sensitive information and can be prone to being lost. Having a security measure for your passport by keeping it on your person inside a money belt is something that would come helpful.

A money belt is something that you access in private

The whole purpose of having a money belt is keeping the stuff inside it hidden from view. Accessing your money belt in a broad daylight defeats the whole purpose of having a money bag—to hide your stuff. Go to the restroom if you have a need to access your money belt during the day. Otherwise, a money belt shouldn’t hold something that you’e going to need on a regular basis during the entirety of your journey. So during the time you’re in need of whatever inside your money belt, such as your passport, get it out and have it ready inside your bag instead.

Don’t stuff things you need on a daily basis inside your money belt

Aside from highly inconvenient, using your money belt as a “wallet replacement” is simply out of the question. You’ll draw attention to your money belt by fiddling around with it. If you’re going to stash money inside it, then store only emergency cash.

Money belts are not a wallet replacement

Keep your usual wallet with you. You’re going to need it. Imagine your money belt as your emergency savings account—just on a more physical level—it’s not something you should be taking from on a daily basis.

What are the things that you can safely keep inside your money belt?

A reminder just in case:

  • Your money belt is there for you to store stuff you don’t want stolen
  • Money belt is not something you use to store the things you need everyday; eg. Your money for meal and transportation, the credit card you often use, etc.

So what are the things you can keep inside money belt to make the most out of it? For sure, get your emergency cash inside your money belt. Other things you may want to consider include important documents, especially ones related to your travel. Get your passport inside your money belt as well for safekeeping. However, make sure not to keep the copy of your passport inside the same place as your genuine passport. Make sure to keep them separate

What are some of the types of money belts?

Money belts come in different styles and sizes. The most common ones would be waist and shoulder money belts. However, money belts for legs, pockets, and other variations are available as well. Pick one that suits your needs.

Secure Travel 101: How to Safely Carry Your Passport

Option 1: Carry your passport on your person wherever you go. There are various reasons why you would want to carry your passport for the whole duration of time of your travel. Proving your identity is one thing. But some of you may want to have your passport on your person for a number of different reasons aside from a sense of security. Cashback or discounts on places that offer duty-free shopping is one of these instances you would want to get your passport with you.

Option 2: Leaving your passport—how to do it securely? You may want to leave your passport when you go to activities that you’d rather not carry your passport around. Going on a kayaking trip? You probably would rather have your passport tucked safely somewhere rather than stay with you and get soaked in the process.

Make sure to lock up your passport when you decide to leave your passport at your hotel. Get your passport inside a bag or your suitcase that have a reliable lock mechanism. Don’t leave it lying around unprotected even though you know no one will be coming into your hotel room.

Carry your passport using a special bag

Using passport carriers such as money belts is something that would make carrying your passport easier. Money belts or similar bags are usually ones you’d carry under your shirt. Money belts can carry more than just a few bills and coins. You can hold your passport safely there and other important documents. Make sure that you don’t stuff everything inside because then it would just bulge and probably gave out its position on your person. A money belt is not really a place you’d store all of your money at. It’s an inconvenience at best to get inside your money belt every time you’d make a purchase during your travel. Storage tools such as money belt is really something you’d use for things you don’t want to be stolen and things you don’t need often.

Create a copy of your passport

The most convenient way to keep a copy of your passport with you is in a digital form. Taking a picture of the pages of your passport would often suffice. Be wary of uploading your passport, though. Upload it encrypted, if you can, and make sure that no one but you has access to your digital document.

Creating a physical copy of your passport beforehand would also save you the hassle of finding print shops for you to print out your digital copy. You are likely already panicked by then and in no state of mind to take care of something as printing out a copy of your passport.

Give a physical copy of your passport to people you trust

Giving someone your passport may prove to be useful if the unexpected happens. Keep the physical copy of your passport separate from the passport itself. In this case, you can leave the copy at your hotel at all times. If you lose your passport during your journey, then you’ll know immediately where to look for a copy.
